Research Partnerships: Do we want them? Do we need them?

March 19 - Afternoon - An Update on the Mental Health Commission of Canada
The Mental Health Commission of Canada is a non-profit organization created to focus national attention on mental health issues and to work to improve the health and social outcomes of people living with mental illness. The Commission, while funded by the Government of Canada, is a national body, not a federal one. It has been endorsed by all levels of government, although the Commission operates at arm’s length from them. The Commission is currently working on five key initiatives:
1) A mental health strategy;
2) An anti-stigma campaign;
3) Homelessness research demonstration projects;
4) A knowledge exchange centre;
5) The Partners for Mental Health Program.
As a follow up to a presentation given at the 2008 World Congress for Psychiatric Nurses in Regina, Saskatchewan, Michael Howlett, President of the Mental Health Commission of Canada will provide an update on the accomplishments of the Commission to date, as well as the challenges that lie ahead.
Michael Howlett, President of the Mental Health
Commission of Canada, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
March 20 - Morning - Mental Health Promotion — Shifting Landscapes: From Local Stage to World Arena
Mental health is critical to the well being of individuals, societies and countries. However, current global trends have created a world that is experiencing an explosion of stress-related mental health problems.
Psychiatric nurses can play a significant role in promoting mental health at a global level but this requires a paradigmatic shift from local contexts to the larger world perspective. A shift of this nature will require courage, tenacity and commitment—the courage to step out of our professional comfort zones, the tenacity to remain true to our professional ideals and a commitment to excellence in psychiatric nursing care—all of which can be enhanced through global professional collegiality and partnerships. In this way, psychiatric nurses will be able to influence what is played out on the world stage of mental health.
Anna Helewka, RPN, RN, BSN, MSN
Faculty and Curriculum Coordinator, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Psychiatric Nursing, Douglas College, Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada
March 20 - Afternoon - The Neurobiology of Connections
The expanding frontier of neurobiological research is providing mounting evidence of the value of “therapeutic alliance” as a variable changing brain-behavior functions. This session will explore the 2010 research emphasizing the neurobiology of relationship in the context of therapy.
